The 2011 Bicycle Delivery

Last month, The Hive delivered the thousands of bicycles that were built during year three of The Bicycle Factory.

Since 2009, Canadians have built more than 13,000 bicycles simply by entering UPCs from their favourite Cadbury products at TheBicycleFactory.ca. And over the course of those three years, we’ve delivered them to schoolchildren in more than 200 communities in Ghana.

The Bicycle Factory will be back open on April 3rd, 2012 so don’t forget to grab your favourite Cadbury products and head over to TheBicycleFactory.ca to turn UPCs into parts and help us reach this year’s goal of building 5000 more bikes to bring to kids in Ghana.

More Newbees

The Hive is pleased to announce that we have made some very important new additions to our line up.

The inimitable Lisa Rostek has come on board as integrated process director. She’ll be working with our account, creative and finance departments to streamline some of our processes and facilitate client-agency integration. For years, Lisa was the director of convergent project management at Cossette. Prior to that she was director of project management at Blitz Direct. Check out some of the online buzz about Lisa’s arrival at The Hive at PRinCanada.com and MarketingMag.ca.

The incorrigible Po Karim has joined us as an event coordinator. Po spent the last several years working as a freelance event coordinator. Here at The Hive he will be ensuring that our event marketing activations continue to run like well-oiled machines. He’s also the drummer/lead singer of a super awesome garage-punk band called “Drugs in Japan”. Check it out.

Another new addition to the event department is the irrepressible Mary Zondanos. Our newest event supervisor comes to us from Pride Toronto where she spent the last two years helping produce the Pride Festival. She also takes pictures of clouds, spins under the name DJ Fondants and owns a company called J’adore Festival.

Finally, coming to us straight from Nashville where she was a professional singer and songwriter, performing her own original brand of new country, the mysterious person known simply as “J” has joined the event department to fill the role of “wearer of many hats.”

Welcome to The Hive Lisa, Po, Mary and J.
Now get back to work.

CASSIES Gold: Caramilk’s Success Is No Secret

STRATEGYONLINE.ca – Jan. 24, 2012 – Situation Analysis: Caramilk is legendary because of its long history of advertising the Caramilk Secret. That continued until 2007, when in reaction to increased competition, Caramilk shelved the campaign and moved to a new strategy based on indulgence. Unfortunately, this confused consumers, leading to significant equity declines. Something had to be done.

Little Babee Theo

It’s official: the lovable rogue Klint Davies and his lovely wife Del are the proud parents of a beautiful baby boy. Theodore James D’Amico-Davies was born at 1:38pm on January 20th in the comfort of their own living room, weighing an even 8 lbs and (as Del would like to point out) with a head circumference of 35cm.

Since the adorable little guy was born, Klint and Del have been adjusting to parenthood and their gargantuan bullmastiff Bill has been adjusting to not being the centre of attention. Here at The Hive, we’re overjoyed for the growing family and we can hardly wait to meet Theo. Congratulations Klint and Del and welcome to the world babee Theo.

Some More Sweet Golden Honey

We are very pleased to announce that last night The Hive and our client Kraft Canada were awarded a golden Cassie for our Caramilk Key to the Secret campaign. Way to go team. You’ve done it again.

99 Bottles Of Bear On The Wall

As part of our ongoing initiative to ‘Invent what’s right’, art director-writer team Paul & Jess (aka PP&J) created a unique installation to correct a glaring wrong here at The Hive – a big ‘ol ugly white wall.

Entitled Revenge is Sweet, the piece consists of ninety-nine decapitated honey bear bottles, mounted on walnut plaques. According to the artists, it’s meant to be “a comment on the current state of honeybee / bear relations in Canada. In other words, you’ve taken our honey, now we’ll take your heads.”

All joking aside, in a few months the plaques will be taken down and sold right here on The Hive Buzz. All proceeds will go to Save Our Bees, a program from The Honey Council to help save Canada’s disappearing honeybees. Learn more here.

The team would like to thank the talented Anne Smythe, whose tireless cutting, gluing and patience made this project possible. You’re the hardest worker bee around.

Merry = Ho to the Ho squared

As the inventors of what’s right, our minds run at a more complex level than most. Which is why this year we didn’t want to do your standard holiday greeting card. Instead, we wanted to create something to celebrate the ones who’ve come before us. The unsung heroes of the holidays whose inventiveness has made it possible for fires to be foolproof, boots to be bone dry and no mitten ever to be left behind.

With the help of photographer extraordinaire Andrew B. Myers and our friends at Westside we created a series of limited edition cards in honour of five inventors and their seasonal inventions. If you’re lucky enough to get a set, share ‘em. If not, we encourage you to still raise a glass of cheer to those who’ve made your holidays more bearable. As we gather round the bird, we most certainly will.

This year, The Hive created a series of ads starring some of the actresses and filmmakers whose work is being featured in Breast Fest, a film festival put on by Rethink Breast Cancer and dedicated to screening movies made by people whose lives have been affected by breast cancer.

So if you live in Toronto, keep an eye out for this beautiful series of ads and be sure to grab a ticket to Breast Fest which is taking place at the Royal Ontario Museum from November 18th to 20th.
